Nautical Vibes

IMG_2476 IMG_2505 IMG_2491 IMG_2520 IMG_2504

I couldn’t wait to put together an outfit my new birthday purse, and this hand-me-down dress seemed like the perfect match! My friend @acuppateawithag on Instagram was recently clearing out her closet (like we all need to do once in a while) and I got this adorable nautical-inspired dress from her along with a couple other cute things. And what’s better to go with a blue and white striped dress than an anchor bracelet? You’ll never guess what this upcycled bracelet started as: a boot strap! One of my recent eBay purchases came with a pair of boots a few sizes too big for my little feet, but the decorative faux leather straps with gold hoop connectors were just begging to be made into something new, so I threw on a little anchor charm I had lying around, and voila! A “new” bracelet!

Not-so-mellow Yellow

Close-up Full-shot Hair Shoes Close-up2

Today was a bright-and-cheery yellow day! Nothing like some colorful patterned pants and a bright yellow top to keep you in a good mood on a sunny day. I took a little car trip today to visit some friends, so my satchel was handy for all my day-trip needs, and it provided some contrast to the bright colors of the rest of my outfit. I also can’t get enough of these aviator glasses. I highly recommend getting a pair for practical purposes- and style of course!

Straw and Silk

Full-shot Full-shot2 Close-up2 Hat Close-up

You may not think you recognize this sweet straw hat, but it’s actually from a bitty outfit that I picked up yesterday at the AG store! I was cashing out and mentioned how much I love hats to the cashier, and she recommended this outfit (which happens to be on sale right now for only $19), and I was sold immediately. The shoes were a little too summery for today’s outfit, but they are adorable too and fit very well. I’m also sporting a new scarf, which I made from some vintage silk that I have in my stash. If it suits your fancy, you will be happy to know that similar items will soon be available in my Etsy shop with the upcoming release of a whole new line! Check back for more information later this week!

Style Series- Creating a Unique Style Part 5: Choose a Fashion Idol

Creating a style that’s all your own can be difficult, especially when you and many of your peers shop at the same stores. These styling tips will help you break out of the mold and stand out with your own unique style!

Part 5: Choose a Fashion Idol

When all else fails in creating your own style- steal someone else’s! You will undoubtedly come through with your own twist on it anyway, so it will still be uniquely yours. Find a celebrity (or a few!) with a look that you love, and use their outfits to get ideas. Collect pictures of your favorite outfits of theirs (hello Pinterest!) and then study them. Ask yourself what makes the outfit appeal to you. Is it the colors that she (or he) mixes? The patterns? Maybe the cut of the clothing or the way the fabric drapes? If you can identify these elements, that can help you apply them to your own wardrobe without being discouraged that you don’t have the exact top or the exact accessory that she’s wearing.

Taylor Swift- Taylor is a great gal for inspiration for a girly-girl, with an occasionally edgy side. I loved the colors that she put together in this outfit, and when I saw the skirt I knew I had just the one to use in recreating her look!

Emma Watson- Emma can rock a lot of different looks, but she always looks very stylish. Even in a comfy travel outfit, you can tell she has a great sense of style! I love the monochromatic scheme of this outfit, and the mixing of a baggy sweater with a slim-fitting bottom half.

Elle Fanning- Elle has such a sweet look and always looks fabulous in photo shoots. She tends to wear oversized clothes with a boho look, but when I stumbled on this picture, I thought she looked adorable! I don’t have a skirt exactly like hers, but this pleated skirt is a similar style and I used the shoes to add in the colors of her skirt. Since my skirt is so plain, I added the bow belt as a “Clarisse” touch.

Pleasant Surprises

Close-upFull-shotHatBootsBack

I’m surprised I haven’t done this sock/boot combination before. I’ve always loved the look of tall socks and short boots, and I think these ones pair particularly well with these dark wash skinny jeans, which tuck nicely inside the socks. I’m also pretty sure I’ve never shown off this sweater, yet it is one of my favorite things that I’ve knit. It was one of those experimental projects that turned out much better than I expected, which is a glorious thing in knitting since alterations are not really an option. There’s nothing like the feeling of finishing a knit garment only to find that it does not fit. Just the thought of it gives me chills.

You Can Call Me Princess

Close-upFull-shotHatShoesFull-shot2

I would call this look “Kate Middleton goes to prep school.” The classic wool blazer, collared blouse, and A-line khaki skirt have a school-girl feel, but Kate often wears classic jackets and pretty blouses, and of course adding this hat, perched upon my head in a slight forward tilt, was done with Kate in mind. She has such a beautifully elegant style that is great for inspiration, but as you can tell I like to add my own “Clarisse” elements, such as my favorite polka-dot tights and a giant bow on the hat. Kate is also a great inspiration for spring- I can’t wait for a spring event to attend so I can steal ideas from her fabulous garden party looks!

Part 4: Find your “Signature”

You may be tired of hearing me say this, but I love bows. For me, they’re one of the things that makes my outfits Clarisse. I don’t wear one every day, but when I feel something is missing, I know just what to add. For you, it could be cowboy boots, dangle earrings, scarves, colored tights, funky necklaces- whatever you like to wear all the time! It could also be a design like nautical patterns, polka dots, or even a color that you always try to have somewhere on your outfit. It could also be bows (just sayin’). What’s your signature?
