Questions for Clarisse: Mix-and-Match Basics

Several people who entered the style question giveaway asked about the basics of a mix-and-match wardrobe, and how to have the maximum potential of outfits without getting overwhelmed with too much clothing. To answer this, I went into my wardrobe and pulled out my most versatile pieces along with just a couple of accessories and the shoes I use most. I ended up with 24 pieces that I think are a great foundation to a minimal (but not boring) wardrobe! As you can see, you don’t necessarily have to limit yourself to one color theme in order to have pieces that can work together, but it helps to have some key colors along with plenty of neutrals. Here, I focused on coral/peach, orchid purple, aqua/turquoise, and soft pink.

NkDORd1436821372

1. Denim Jacket (Coconut’s Best Friend)- looks great over almost any dress or top and really pulls an outfit together
2. Printed Jersey Dress (La Poupee Bijoux)- casual and great for summer and spring
3. Calf Boots (Saige’s Meet)- works with dresses as well as with leggings or skinny jeans tucked in, and is fit for all seasons
4. Colored Cardigan (Bitty Blossom)- cardis are my favorite for completing an outfit, and a solid colored one that coordinates with other things in your wardrobe is sure to be a favorite
5. Long Necklace (Clarisse Original)- something to add a little flair to any outfit
6. Printed Cotton Dress (JanieJumps/SparrowandWren)- can be dressed up or down and makes an easy outfit with just an accessory or two
7. Espadrilles (Springfield)- a neutral colored shoe like this goes with almost anything and is great for the spring or summer
8. Subtle Print Tee (CarolineAugustDesign)- a subtle print is a little more interesting than a plain tee, but can still be mixed with other prints easily
9. Black Purse (DesignsbyOrvie)- a little shoulder bag is a great accessory, and black goes with lots of outfits
10. Printed Pants (KateLaurenDesigns)- adding a print on the bottom can really open up more options for interesting outfits, even though it may seem limiting based on what you have for on top. This is where the subtle print tee and a simple white tank come in handy.
11. Printed Tank (Clarisse’s Closet Summer 2014)- something simple that’s great for layering
12. Layering Piece (Weekend Fun) – can be a vest or maybe a sleeveless button-up top, just something that can be worn over other pieces without being too heavy
13. Denim Shorts (Exclusively18)- simple and go with any top
14. Colored Sandals (Weekend Fun)- add a pop of color to an outfit
15. Summer Scarf (Clarisse Original)- easy accessory to add interest to an outfit
16. Chambray button-up (KateLaurenDesigns)- perfect for layering or wearing on its own
17. White Tank (Clarisse Original)- self explanatory!
18. Slim-fit Jeans (Closet4Chloe)- fit inside boots and look cute with sandals or flats
19. Floral Blouse (Kit’s School Skirt)- Slightly dressier when paired with skirts, but can be dressed down with jeans
20. Neutral Skirt (JanieJumps/SparrowandWren)- More girly option to pair with patterned tops
21. Brown satchel (Battat/Ebay)- Just another option to add to outfits for a more completed look
22. Metallic Sandals (CraftySewingBee)- I find myself reaching for these for almost any outfit- they are more interesting than a brown or black sandal, but still go with any color
23. Cozy sweater (Isabelle’s Coral Sweater)- for a comfy, casual outfit
24. Black leggings (2-in-1 Skating Set)- can be worn alone for a casual look, or layered under skirts and dresses to help them transition into cooler seasons.

Here are some other outfit sets I created with the same 24 pieces:

Questions for Clarisse: Grace’s Skirt, Julie’s Pants, and Fun Fedora

I’m having fun reading everyone’s giveaway entries/ style questions! (See HERE for details).
You have until Friday at noon EST to submit your question, so if you haven’t yet, don’t miss out!

I’ve been working on answering your questions via email, but don’t worry if you don’t get a reply by Friday, you are still entered in the giveaway.

A few of you asked about styling particular AG outfits or items, which I love answering on the blog! I picked a few to do today:

Grace’s Meet Skirt, Julie’s Tunic Outfit Pants, and the new Fun Fedora

To start off, I had to share this picture of Elle from earlier this year, because she worked Grace’s skirt into a great winter outfit with leggings, boots and a sweater. A tucked-in top is a must with this skirt because who would want to hide that adorable bow?

For the rest of the outfits I used a virtual outfit creating website (Polyvore). They are mostly AG pieces, but I filled in the gaps with some things from Etsy and girl-sized basics that can easily be translated into things your doll may have in her wardrobe.

Here’s a little blast-from-the-past with last year’s Girl of the Year Isabelle’s accessories paired with the skirt! In general, black pairs great with this skirt, letting the skirt be the focus of the outfit. I think the gold purse adds a little touch of something extra to catch your eye, but really it’s all about the skirt and that bow!

I think aqua is a nice color to go with this very pink skirt, and since it’s so short, a pair of printed leggings add a great flair and some more coverage (sadly these cute ones are not actually for AG dolls, but you get the idea). A white top (again, tucked in of course!) creates a great backdrop for a colorful beaded necklace.

Next we have Julie’s Tunic Outfit pants. The bright pink color and wide-legged style make them a tricky piece for a modern wardrobe, but the good news is 70’s looks are definitely trending this year, making bell bottoms a go! I like the idea of mixing different shades of the same hue, so a lighter pink mixes well with the vibrant color of the pants. A top like this that bells out at the hip also creates a nice shape to echo the flare of the pants.

Hat: Grace’s Welcome Gifts

Shoes: AG Sweet Spring

Also try looking for accessories that have a pop of that bright pink to tie in with the pants. Coconut’s glasses in the tee (seriously how do I not have this shirt yet, it’s adorable with everything), the hat band, the flower on the bag- all have little bits of the pink, without making the outfit look too pink-crazy. Like with Grace’s skirt, aqua is a great color to mix with pink, but also use some neutrals like white and natural straw to break up the brightness of the colors.

Tee: Coconut Cutie
Hat and Bag: Seaside Tote
Shoes: Bow-toe Moccasins

I cannot wait to get this fedora. Bravo AG on adding hats to your accessories line- from a sincere hat lover! I think this hat can look great with so many different looks. This is a great “school” outfit, which is easy and casual, but the hat really takes it up a notch.

Skirt: Love to Layer Accessories

Here’s a different casual look featuring an AG store top. This hat is great for taking simple tee’s (like the red ones with the store locations on them that everyone has at least one of) and turning them into more fashionable looks. I went with this purple one because I love the teal band with purple, but teal can work as a pop of color against almost anything, so just try it with whatever you have to see what works!

Pieces Shown:
Top: Sparkle Star Tee
Shorts: Maddies Girls

Personally, I even love this hat with a dressy outfit! It actually helps dress down a look like this, which may seem a little too fancy for some people for an everyday look. The hat gives a menswear-inspired touch to the sweetness of a dress and cardigan, which I think is a really fun combo.

Sandals: Shimmer and Lace Party Dress

I hope this helps give you some ideas!

Questions for Clarisse: Molly’s Meet and Ruffled Hoodie Outfit

Some followers were hoping for tips on styling these outfits, so here are some ideas for mixing and matching!

Molly’s meet outfit                      and               Ruffled Hoodie Outfit

I used a virtual outfit-creating website (Polyvore) to come up with some outfits. There are mostly AG pieces, and I filled in the gaps with some things from Etsy and girl-sized basics that can easily be translated into things your doll may have in her wardrobe.

Cozy Cutie: Spring may be coming, but you don’t have to put away the sweaters and scarves quite yet! Try pairing Molly’s sweater with red and black (yes, it’s okay to mix navy and black!) and add accessories such as glasses and a hairbow for the “cute nerd” look inspired by the argyle design.

Dressy Casual: Dress up a casual sweater and jeans outfit with accessories such as a stylish hat, purse, and jewelry. Play up the colors in Molly’s sweater with bright red and green accents, or add contrasting colors like aqua and yellow.

Pieces Shown:
Hat, Purse, Bracelet: AG Kit’s Accessories
Jeans: MaddiesGirls on Etsy
Shoes: AG School Days
Necklace: A Saige’s Accessories

Brightest in the Class: Molly’s skirt is perfect for a school outfit, and don’t forget to try the dickie with different outfits! A sweater over a collar is a very popular look, and it adds a little something extra to an outfit.
Molly meet outfit 3
Pieces Shown:
Sweater: AG Flower Sweater
Headband and Shoes: AG Grace’s City Outfit

Almost Spring: Here’s a great transition outfit for when it looks like spring but it’s too early to break out the sandals and shorts. Molly’s skirt pairs nicely with the Ruffled Hoodie tank, just add an outer layer and a hat for a complete look.

In the Garden: While I admire AG’s attempt at fashion-forward for the new “Sunshine Garden” outfit, I think the Ruffled Hoodie tank pairs much better with the cute plaid shorts than the asymmetrical top they come with. This tank is great for a summer outfit paired with shorts, sandals, and some accessories to protect your girl from the sun!

Out Shopping: The Ruffled Hoodie pants look perfect for a day out shopping: stylish but comfortable! Try mixing the light grey pants with a more saturated color on top, like this jewel-tone sweater-tee.
ruffle hoodie 3
Pieces Shown:
Top: AG Sparkly Camp
Shoes: AG Starry Hoodie
Bag: AG Grace’s Paris Accessories

Soft and Subtle: Or, do the opposite! Pair the light colored pants with similar light colors for an understated monochromatic look. (And who could resist wearing pink glasses that match the puppy’s glasses on your shirt?)

Fashionably Funky: For the ruffled hoodie, try experimenting with different styles to layer it over, such as a longer tunic top with sleeves that will show past the hoodie sleeves. Mixing it with bold colors and prints gives it a totally different look than the original outfit.

Questions for Clarisse: Saige’s Parade Outfit and Flower Sweater

Question from Isabella: “Hey Clarisse! I have an outfit called Saiges Parade Outfit. It tends to collect dust in the back of my dolls closet as I don’t know how to use it. Can you please make a post on it for me?”

Question from unicornsnrainbows2014: “Hi Clarisse! So I have an outfit that I would love for you to help me with. It is the flower sweater and skirt set from AGs summer release last year. I would love to buy the outfit, but I need help convincing myself that it would be a good outfit to buy…could you show me some mix and match potential in it? I know it’s there…:)”

Flower Sweater and Skirt Outfit and Saige’s Parade Outfit
Flower Sweater and SkirtSaiges Parade
As I started playing around with these two outfits, I realized how much mix-and-match potential there was between them, so I decided to do a 2-for-1 post! I used a virtual outfit creating website (Polyvore) to come up with some outfits. There are mostly AG pieces, and I filled in the gaps with some things from Etsy and girl-sized basics that can easily be translated into things your doll may have in her wardrobe.

Truly Trendy: Don’t say goodbye to those trendy summer maxi skirts yet! Pairing them with sweaters is a great way to transition into fall. For accessories, try choosing a contrasting cool color, such as this medium blue, to balance the brightness of the sweater.
Flower Sweater Outfit 1
Pieces Shown:
Skirt: ThisTooBoutique on Etsy
Shoes: Plaid Party

Flower Power: I just love the way the flowers on Saige’s parade boots match the floral skirt from the other outfit, so I had to do an outfit with them together. The sparkly camp top picks up the colors in the skirt as well, and a fun hat adds that extra touch of style.
Flower Sweater Outfit 2
Pieces Shown:
Top: Sparkly Camp

Peachy Sweet: The adorable peachy colored skirt from the Coconut Cutie outfit is just so lovely with Saige’s Parade top! Get a similar look by pairing neutrals with the colors in the blouse for a mono-chromatic feel.
Saige's Parade Outfit 1
Pieces Shown:
Vest: Weekend Fun
Shoes: True Spirit Meet
Skirt: Coconut Cutie

While we’re on the Coconut Cutie outfit, the adorable Coconut tee looks great with Saige’s parade pants and belt. Jazz up a simple tee-and-jeans look by adding colorful accents like these fringe boots or a hat with some detail.
Saige's Parade Outfit 2
Pieces Shown:
Tee: Coconut Cutie
Boots: Sparkly Camp
Hat: Bitty Little Hearts

Bright and Bold: Here’s another look that plays with the colors in the floral skirt. Saige’s belt looks great over the skirt with a tucked-in top, and bold colored shoes, glasses, and a contrasting bag are great ways to spice up an outfit.

Flower Sweater Outfit 3
Pieces Shown:
Sweater: Isabelle’s Coral Sweater
Shoes: School Days
Bag: Seaside Tote Set
Glasses: Rosy Glasses

Layered-up: A collared shirt with a pull-over sweater is a great go-to look for fall, so be sure to have a few of each in your wardrobe! This works well with jeans and sneakers, or you could use ideas from one of the other outfits like a skirt and some more accessories.

Questions for Clarisse: Isabelle’s Rosette Leotard

Question from Bella: I have a piece called Isabelle’s Rosette Leotard. I cannot figure out how to make it stylish or pair it with things. I really would like so advice, Clarisse. Could you make a post about it?

Isabelle’s wardrobe is great for dolls who have a passion for dance, but many of her pieces are also great for mix-and-matching in an everyday wardrobe! In my last post you may have seen that I wore one of her leotards as part of my outfit, and now you can get a few more ideas on how to work a leo into your wardorbe.

Outfit 1: Try wearing the leo with a pair of fun printed pants and a cardigan! The leo works great as a basic “tucked-in” tank so you can draw the attention of the outfit to other fun pieces.

Pants: KateLaurenDesigns on Etsy
Cardigan: AG Bitty Blossom

Outfit 2: You can also use the leo as a layering tank with another top, which is a fun way to add a little interest to a simple outfit. Paired with a skirt, the layered tops create a very stylish look!

Outfit 3: Here we are drawing the focus to a fun long skirt by keeping things simple on top with just the leo. This way your options are wide open for accessorizing, such as adding a stylish hat.

Celebrity Inspiration

During the last Style Series, I did a post on using celebrities for inspiration. It was such a big hit, that I’ve decided to revisit the idea and bring you celeb inspired outfits 2.0!

Find a celebrity (or a few) with a look that you love, and use their outfits to get ideas. Collect pictures of your favorite outfits of theirs (hello Pinterest!) and then study them. Ask yourself what makes the outfit appeal to you. Is it the colors that she (or he) mixes? The patterns? Maybe the cut of the clothing or the way the fabric drapes? If you can identify these elements, that can help you apply them to your own wardrobe without being discouraged that you don’t have the exact top or the exact accessory that she’s wearing.

Here are some examples of outfits I’ve recreated using pieces in my wardrobe!

Emma Stone/Gwen Stacy- I can’t quite verify if this is an Emma outfit or a Gwen outfit since she was on the set of Spider Man 2 when spotted, but either way it’s a great casual look that is very classic and cool. I love the way she mixes the preppy blouse and jacket with the cute slouchy hat, and the contrasting light pink shoes are just darling. Focusing on the layering and colors, I came up with this cute look!

Shailene Woodley- This rising star is quickly becoming a fashion icon (plus she holds a special place in our hearts since she played Felicity in the American Girl movie). Here she is able to make even a casual grey sweatshirt look fashionable, so I worked around that and added the colored straight-leg pants and a blue floral scarf to mimic her blouse, which coordinates with the shoes.

Lupita Nyong’o- Lupita is a stunning inspiration to so many young women, and her style is no less inspiring! She is known for wearing bright and bold colors, but here she pairs burgundy with light pink and the look is fabulous! Adding in some metallic accessories completes the feel of Lupita’s look, which is feminine but a little edgy.

Hailee Steinfeld- Having just purchased this lovely salmon colored coat, I couldn’t resist recreating this adorable look by Hailee. The way she mixes the beautiful colored coat with a beige dress and shoes and then a bright red bag is so simple yet very chic.

Style Series- Creating a Unique Style Part 5: Choose a Fashion Idol

Creating a style that’s all your own can be difficult, especially when you and many of your peers shop at the same stores. These styling tips will help you break out of the mold and stand out with your own unique style!

Part 5: Choose a Fashion Idol

When all else fails in creating your own style- steal someone else’s! You will undoubtedly come through with your own twist on it anyway, so it will still be uniquely yours. Find a celebrity (or a few!) with a look that you love, and use their outfits to get ideas.

Taylor Swift- Taylor is a great gal for inspiration for a girly-girl, with an occasionally edgy side. I loved the colors that she put together in this outfit, and when I saw the skirt I knew I had just the one to use in recreating her look!

Emma Watson- Emma can rock a lot of different looks, but she always looks very stylish. Even in a comfy travel outfit, you can tell she has a great sense of style! I love the monochromatic scheme of this outfit, and the mixing of a baggy sweater with a slim-fitting bottom half.

Elle Fanning- Elle has such a sweet look and always looks fabulous in photo shoots. She tends to wear oversized clothes with a boho look, but when I stumbled on this picture, I thought she looked adorable! I don’t have a skirt exactly like hers, but this pleated skirt is a similar style and I used the shoes to add in the colors of her skirt. Since my skirt is so plain, I added the bow belt as a “Clarisse” touch.

Part 4: Find your “Signature”

You may be tired of hearing me say this, but I love bows. For me, they’re one of the things that makes my outfits Clarisse. I don’t wear one every day, but when I feel something is missing, I know just what to add. For you, it could be cowboy boots, dangle earrings, scarves, colored tights, funky necklaces- whatever you like to wear all the time! It could also be a design like nautical patterns, polka dots, or even a color that you always try to have somewhere on your outfit. It could also be bows (just sayin’). What’s your signature?

Sophisticated Fun

Full-shotClose-upHairShoes

I decided to test yesterday’s theory out again, this time mixing patterns. I stayed within the burgundy/cream/hint of green color world, and didn’t use too many different textures (2 knits and 2 cottons), but I mixed some pretty fun patterns. Again, the idea was “eclectic, but not eccentric.” I love how this sweater looks with this tunic dress, especially since the dress is sleeveless and this allows me to get more use out if it during the winter! With plain tights and a simpler hair accessory, I think I could look quite sophisticated, but with patterned tights and a patterned headband, the look definitely has a side of fun.

Eclectic

Close-up1Full shotShoesClose-up2

I know I always mix and match, but today I really had fun with trying different outfit combinations. My rule of thumb when going for slightly unusual combos is to do it with either color, pattern, or texture, but not all three. I like to call this theory: eclectic, but not eccentric. In this case I went for texture: knit tights, metallic faux leather belt, nubby knit scarf, sparkle denim skirt, and rubber boots. I kept the colors and patterns pretty simple though, to avoid crossing over into eccentric.
